Russell “Rusty” Linwood Balderson passed away on August 15, 2026, after a serious illness that he fought valiantly. He was 65 years old.
Born in Lottsburg, Virginia, and raised in Center Cross, Virginia, Rusty carried with him throughout his life a deep love of family, a strong work ethic, a generous spirit, and a sense of humor that could brighten any room.
Rusty was the beloved husband of Laurie C. Balderson, with whom he shared 27 years of marriage, and the proud father of their son, James Ryland Balderson. His family was at the center of his life, and some of his happiest moments were the simplest ones—spending time at home with Laurie and James, watching their favorite shows together, and thoroughly spoiling his dogs, who could always count on Rusty to sneak them a treat when no one was supposed to be looking.
Rusty was a graduate of York Academy in Virginia and later attended the Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. He built a long and successful career in the construction industry and served as Chief Estimator at W.M. Jordan Company. He took particular pride not only in his work but also in helping others succeed. Rusty generously shared his knowledge and experience with younger employees, serving as a mentor to many over the years. Among them was Seth Speight, whom Rusty came to love and consider a second son.
An avid sports fan and former football player, Rusty loved the Green Bay Packers and NASCAR. Music was another constant in his life, particularly classic rock, although anyone who knew him well also knew that “Brick House” held a special place among his favorite songs.
Perhaps what people will remember most about Rusty was his ability to make them laugh. He loved telling stories—and those stories tended to become a little more colorful, a little more dramatic, and considerably more entertaining with each retelling. Rusty never let complete accuracy get in the way of a good story. He was the happiest when he could make someone else laugh.
Beneath the jokes and stories was a man who cared deeply about people. He loved helping others, whether that meant sharing his professional knowledge, helping his son achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, or simply being there when someone needed a helping hand.
Rusty is survived by his wife of 28 years, Laurie C. Balderson; his son, James Ryland Balderson; and his brother, C. Scott Balderson of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, James N. Balderson and Mary Lou Balderson.
Rusty leaves behind a legacy of good works and an enduring love for his family and friends. He will be remembered in the lives of those he helped, guided, and encouraged, the dogs he spoiled, and especially in the laughter he brought to so many.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation Chapel, 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403. If unable to attend, the service will be recorded and can be viewed by clicking here. Donations are suggested to Paws Place in Rusty's memory , a no-kill dog rescue, reflecting his caring and helpful nature.
Those who knew Rusty will have their own stories to tell about him. And knowing Rusty, he would probably insist they make them a little better with each telling.
