Jerry Brown

Jerry Brown, beloved father, grandfather, husband, and community hero, passed away at the age of 90 on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Well, it all started in the bustling neighborhoods of Buffalo, New York, when, on June 21, 1935, a boy named Jerome Nelson Brown was born. From the very beginning, Jerry’s life was shaped by the warmth of family and the richness of a diverse community. Neighbors from every background—Irish, German, Jewish, Polish, African American and Italian—helped nurture his spirit, teaching him the value of connection and belonging.

Jerry’s childhood was filled with curiosity and adventure. He played baseball and football in the streets, forging strong bonds with his brothers and friends. His desire to explore led him to join the Army, where he served as a medic, always eager to help others and see the world.

One fateful day, Jerry met Gloria McKernan, a nurse in Buffalo, both on a bus ride to LeRoy, NY. Their chance encounter blossomed into a love story that would last a lifetime. Gloria became Jerry’s truest love, his partner in every joy and challenge for 62 years.

As a father, Jerry was a guiding light. He taught his children the importance of consistency, curiosity, and nurturing care—not just through grand gestures, but in everyday moments: reading the newspaper, tending the garden, sharing family vacations, loyally committing to his 25 years of work at General Electric, a contributor to the church and community. His wisdom shaped the lives of those he loved most.

When Jerry became a grandfather, his joy multiplied. He cherished every moment with Jake and Andy, passing down traditions like his famous fried egg sandwiches, inventing playful rituals like “how to fly hands” near open windows while driving across a bridge, and setting up the perfect Christmas village. His laughter and unconditional love created memories that will last for generations.

Jerry’s passion for cooking was legendary. Inspired by family recipes and traditions, he delighted friends and family with his signature dishes—meatloaf, lasagna, cranberry chicken, and more. Cooking was never just about food; it was about bringing people together, celebrating love, and strengthening relationships around the table.

But Jerry’s generosity extended far beyond his family. He dedicated countless hours to community service, building houses with Habitat for Humanity, playing Santa Claus for Lower Cape Fear Hospice, cooking for Weekend Meals on Wheels, serving St. Therese, St. Mark and St. Mary’s Catholic churches in many ways, including Vacation Bible School and

RCIA classes, developing and building the Marianist Christian Family Living Center, and leading the Boy Scouts as Troop 215 Scout Master – to name a few. His efforts transformed lives, inspired others to serve, and made a lasting difference in his community. Jerry believed in the power of collective action and encouraged everyone around him to join in making the world a better place.

Jerry’s true loves included not only his family, but also his friends, storytelling, and the hospitality of a tavern, born from his family’s generational Brown’s Tavern in LeRoy, NY. At the Tavern, he was known for captivating tales, a knack for making everyone feel welcome, and a deep appreciation for shared experiences and a good beer. Whether telling stories from his own childhood or spinning fictional adventures, Jerry’s words brought people together and created lasting memories.

As Jerry reached his 90th year, tributes poured in from family and friends, each message reflecting the profound impact he had on their lives. His legacy is one of love, service, and joy - a testament to a life well-lived.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Gloria McKernan Brown. He is survived by his children Jeffrey Brown, Jennifer Harris (Jason), Julie Brown (Stacey Gillis) and Joel Brown; grandsons, Jacob and Andrew Harris; brothers Thomas Brown (Jackie) of Wellsville, NY and Timothy Brown (Donna), of Batavia, NY; several nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends and chosen family, including Allen and Kelly Sanderson, Trish Giddings, and his Weekend Meals on Wheels ladies. His story will continue in the hearts of all who knew him, inspiring future generations to live with kindness, curiosity, and a spirit of service. And to that, everyone said amen!

The family wishes to thank the incredible staff at Champions Assisted Living and Davis Skilled Nursing Center, Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center who loved and cared for him.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his honor to Weekend Meals on Wheels of New Hanover County, the Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center or a charity of your choice.

Graveside services will take place at Oleander Memorial Gardens on Monday, January 19, 2026 at 1pm.
