Wilmington Bakeries including Little Loaf Bakery & Schoolhouse and more
By Sarah. Wilmington, NC
Ever since Julia Castellano moved from the farmers market circuit to her storefront at 3410 Wrightsville Ave, Little Loaf Bakery & Schoolhouse has become one of those "if you know, you know" spots in Wilmington.
Stepping inside honestly feels like a quick trip to Europe or a nostalgic visit to your grandmother's kitchen. It’s charming, warm, and—most importantly—smells incredible. Julia opened the space in 2022 to bridge the gap between old-world bread making and community education, and she’s clearly hit a nerve.
Growth and Local Love
The bakery has quietly doubled in size, now supporting a team of 15. While you can still find them at local farmers markets, the storefront is where the magic happens. They’ve expanded the menu significantly, and if you haven’t tried their laminated dough yet, you’re missing out.
They prep the dough weekly, which means Saturdays are all about the croissants—classic, chocolate, and those gorgeous seasonal fruit-and-cream cups.
Something for Everyone
What I appreciate as a professional always on the go is the variety. They have a rotating selection of sourdoughs and ryes, but keep an eye out for their "one-off" specials. Sometimes it’s a layer cake they made on a whim, or a birthday treat they decided to share with the neighborhood.
She also takes dietary preferences seriously. Julia’s vegan and gluten-free options aren't just an afterthought; she ensures they’re just as high-quality as the traditional loaves. If it isn't perfect, it doesn't make it to the counter.
Beyond the Bread
It’s not just a bakery—it’s a "schoolhouse" too. They host monthly baking and cooking classes that, frankly, fill up almost the second they’re announced. Julia is hoping to add more to the calendar soon, which would be a perfect excuse for a girl's night or a solo Saturday morning learning a new skill.
Even More Bakeries
If you’re looking to explore more of the Wilmington bakery scene, there are some great spots that offer everything from old-school favorites to modern artisan treats. Here are a few that are definitely worth a visit:
For Artisan Bread & Sourdough
The Jelly Cabinet Bakery: Located in the Brooklyn Arts District, this spot is perfect if you like the "made from scratch" vibe. They use local ingredients for their breads and croissants, and the open kitchen gives it a great, authentic feel.
Wilmington Bread Company: A solid choice for high-quality, fresh loaves. It’s often mentioned alongside Little Loaf for those who are serious about their crust and crumb.
Southport Sourdough: If you find yourself a bit further south, this micro-bakery uses organic NC flour and pink Himalayan salt. Their jalapeño cheddar and rosemary garlic loaves are favorites.
For Pastries & Specialty Sweets
One Belle Bakery: This is a go-to for something a bit more indulgent. They have a full retail café on Shipyard Blvd with amazing gourmet doughnuts, croissants, and "Oh My Heavens" cake. It’s a bit more "polished" than a rustic bread shop but great for a treat.
Sweet D’s Cuisine: Located on S. 17th Street, they are becoming famous for their airy, decadent croissants. It’s a newer favorite in town and definitely worth a stop for breakfast.
Apple Annie’s Bake Shop: A Wilmington staple since the '80s. While it’s more of a traditional American bakery (think custom cakes and cookies), it’s the place most locals go for special occasion treats.
Unique Finds
The Peppered Cupcake: If you want something totally different, this downtown spot does gourmet cupcakes with a twist—think savory-sweet combos like balsamic-glazed berries or habanero.
Pie Slayer: A bit more of an evening destination on Princess St, but they have some of the best pies in the area. You can also find their pastries at Hidden Grounds coffee shop if you're looking for a morning fix.
Each of these has its own personality, much like Little Loaf. If you're specifically after that "European cafe" feeling, The Jelly Cabinet or Sweet D’s are probably your best bets!
