2026 Social Security Payment Dates
By Ed Wilmington, NC
Hey there!
I was just looking into this myself—gotta keep an eye on when the deposit hits so I can pay the bills, right? I went through the 2026 schedule to see what we're looking at for next year.
Here is the lowdown on when we get paid, just between us "seasoned citizens."
First, the Good News (The Raise)
Before we get to the dates, did you see the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) looks like it's going to be 2.8% for 2026? It's not a lottery win, but it should add a few extra bucks to the monthly budget starting in January.
The "When Do We Get Paid?" Cheat Sheet
The government still uses that same system based on your birthday (unless you've been on the books since before 1997—I'll get to that in a second).
If you retired recently like me (benefits started after May 1997), here is your schedule:
Born 1st – 10th of the month: You get paid on the Second Wednesday.Born 11th – 20th of the month: You get paid on the Third Wednesday.Born 21st – 31st of the month: You get paid on the Fourth Wednesday.
Watch Out for These Weird Dates in 2026
I marked up my calendar because there are a few holidays that mess with the usual schedule. You don't want to be panicking because the money isn't there on the usual day!
New Year's Shift: Since Jan 1, 2026 is a Thursday, SSI folks actually get their January payment early on Dec 31, 2025.Veterans Day (November 11): This lands on a Wednesday in 2026. If you're in that "Second Wednesday" group (birthday 1st-10th), the banks are closed. They should pay us a day early, on Tuesday, Nov 10.
For the "Old Guard" (Pre-1997 or SSI)
If you've been getting checks since before May 1997, or if you get both Social Security and SSI, you guys are usually on the 3rd of the month.
January: The 3rd is a Saturday, so you get paid Friday, Jan 2.May: The 3rd is a Sunday, so you get paid Friday, May 1.October: The 3rd is a Saturday, so you get paid Friday, Oct 2.
